Abstract

The basic facts of relations between France and the Muslim countries of the Mediterranean – essentially the Ottoman Empire and its échelles or trading stations and ports in the Levant and Maghreb or Barbary Coast – are generally well known. By contrast, the points of convergence that variously exacerbated confrontation and favoured interaction have been relatively neglected.1
