ABSTRACT

Peoples who live on the edge of empires inhabit a complex space. In their desire for political autonomy, they often turn to an imperial centre to adopt cultural practices and ideas that can set them apart from their local rivals. Doing so, however, moves them closer, politically and culturally, to the imperial centre that they seek to remain autonomous from.
