ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the Field Band Foundation (FBF), a South African nonprofit youth development program established in 1997. The FBF aims, through music and dance, to develop the life skills of those affected by socioeconomic inequality, fostering their capability to engage in formal employment, entrepreneurship, or education. Whittaker analyzes the bands’ rehearsals as manifestations of localized musicking, arguing that the localization of musical processes is integral to the achievement of locally established FBF goals as it facilitates the embodiment and rehearsal of values, skills, and subjectivities, particularly discipline and empathy.
