ABSTRACT
This chapter explores how today’s amateur music makers sound out connections between the local and global through their participation in marches, demonstrations, rallies, and benefit concerts. Revealing the extent to which the contemporary activist landscape has been reconfigured by new technologies alongside a rise in people-powered politics, it also considers the potential for politically engaged musicking to transform the personal and collective lives of the givers as well as the lives of distant others. Illustrative examples come mainly from the United Kingdom, where the globalisation of activism has occurred parallel to a revolution in community singing.
