ABSTRACT
This essay is a critique of the ideology of permanence that pervades architectural thought, history, and practice. By exploring the construction of pandals (pavilions) in Kolkata for the religious festival of Durgapuja, the essay discusses how the assembly and disassembly of these structures might suggest a radically different way of thinking and seeing duration in the built fabric.
