ABSTRACT

This chapter explores mobile media (keitai) and communication in Japan, as a key to understanding contemporary modes of Japanese daily practices. As a powerful test-bed for new technology, Japan adopted mobile media and wireless internet quite early so as to provide an excellent example of the possible future of mobile societies. Focusing on Japanese youths as cultural pathfinder for the global adoption of mobile technology, this chapter presents and discusses different cultural forms of mobile practices in Japan to investigate the relationship between mobile technology and its social manifestations.
