ABSTRACT

The global associational revolution described by Lester Salamon in the mid 1990s has not excluded Africa and Asia. Discussions of the roles of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and, more recently, as scholarly trends have changed, civil society in both regions have been vigorous and the scholarly literature focused on them is in many ways impressive. The focus, however, has been on the effects of globalisation and the development of global civil society, especially since the 1980s, or on national and sub-national issues facing NGOs. An intermediate region-to-region focus is lacking.
