ABSTRACT

Contingency management (CM) is an evidence-based addictions treatment that provides tangible reinforcers for engagement in positive behaviors (e.g., abstinence from substance use, attending treatment). The primary goal of CM is to reward behaviors that are inconsistent with continued substance use. This technique is based on the principles of operant conditioning or the idea that an individual is more likely to repeat a behavior that is rewarded. Contingency management has been successfully applied to a range of substance use disorders in a variety of settings, as described in detail below.
