This chapter considers the thriving practice of screening live theatre performances in cinemas with a two-fold purpose. In tracing out the problems of nomenclature arising from the incorporation of new technologies vis-à-vis audience reception into the live performance paradigm, and considering notions of liveness and mediatisation, I make the case that the live relay is a particularly sophisticated and complex adaptive instantiation in its own right.
