ABSTRACT
Study of the past in the southwestern Indian Ocean has been carried out through multiple disciplines including archaeology, the latter being the most relevant vis à vis the period prior to the fifteenth century ce. The southwestern Indian Ocean is characterised by a relatively uniform cultural complex, such that this archaeological case study can be seen as one that helps integrate both the specifics of life in northern Madagascar as well as that along the larger eastern African coast.
