ABSTRACT

Mombasa, the second largest city in Kenya and largest seaport on the eastern African coast, sits on a small, well-sheltered coralline island of 14.5 km2, with deep-water anchorages on both east and west (Map 1, p. xxii). Today the island is connected to the mainland by a causeway, bridge and ferry; it is bounded by the Port Kilindini and Port Reitz creek complexes to the south and west, and the Mombasa Harbour and Port Tudor complexes to the east and north.
