ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the different ways that art and culture can help critical International Relations scholars question the conjunctions of power, knowledge and privilege. It reflects on the helpful ways that IR scholars have used art and culture to question received disciplinary knowledge, trouble foundational methodologies, and re-imagine global life-worlds. Building on the pioneering work of the late Alex Danchev, the chapter sketches out three different ways to understand art, culture and IR: focusing on the meanings derived from the representation itself; drawing out the affective connections between viewers and artworks; and forging collaborations with like-minded scholars and artists.
