Semantics is the study of meaning and to the extent that translation concerns the conveyance of a message in one language that “means the same” as a message previously conveyed in another language, meaning is a central concept in translation theory. This chapter discusses a number of theories of meaning showing that, translation, in turn, is central in the accounts they provide of how sameness of meaning can, or cannot, be theorized.
