ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the key curricular and pedagogical changes and innovations in ten countries in the Asian region, including South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Nepal, Fiji, and Kyrgyzstan, based on the country reports and presentations in a research project organized by the UNESCO Bangkok office in October 2013. The presentations and findings provide evidence of the efforts the countries invested in bringing changes to the curriculum and pedagogical innovations toward enhancing the capacities of children in schools. However, several countries showed stronger evidence that changes have been institutionalized and well-received in their school infrastructures than others. The implementation of curricular and pedagogical innovations requires consistent government policies and planning on how changes and innovations are to be initiated, designed, organized, and sustained in school systems.
