ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews global citizenship education (GCE) in Asia by positioning curriculum within global discourses of civic education reform and regional characteristics that influence curricular intentions for GCE. In surveying studies, we found cosmopolitan principles in traditional values and contemporary definitions of GCE. Although civic education policies tend to be nationalistic and depoliticized, the review yielded variations in orientations towards neoliberal discourses of economic development and the cosmopolitan principles of social transformation and deliberation over public issues. We forward a typology of GCE orientations to capture variations of GCE intentions and discuss enabling discourses in cosmopolitan GCE. The chapter concludes by revisiting how global discourses are challenging nation-centric conceptions of citizenship and by pointing to future directions in GCE research and practice.
