ABSTRACT

Turkish people have been familiar with elections and voting throughout their history. Turks have been familiar with elections and voting both during the period they lived in their own homeland, Central Asia, and during the time they have lived in Land of Anatolia, where they intermingled with the natives about 1,000 years ago. Elections, impressing voters and voting were significant in Turkish political life. Especially after they adopted Islam, Turks promoted voting and elections. After the death of the prophet Muhammed, the process of electing the four great caliphs was held up as an example of the peaceful passing power. Although from time to time Turks abandoned that process, the principle of elections and voting were maintained and highly valued in Turkish attitudes and ideals.
