ABSTRACT
The article reviews all the evidence of religion in pre-Christian Edessa and its immediate environment, with detailed reference to early Syriac inscriptions and evidence provided by literary sources. The spread of Greco-Roman religious ideas is considered and the emergence of Christianity is treated as a continuation of earlier Hellenisation. The persistence of pagan religion into the Christian period is also discussed.
