ABSTRACT

Governance and democracy are important concepts for the effective operation of any organization. Bevir (2009) explained good governance as “a legitimate state with a democratic mandate, an efficient and open administration, and the use of competition and markets in the public and private sectors” (p. 26). In addition, Bevir (2009) acknowledged the quest of many international agencies to put in place checks and balances for executive powers to ensure appropriate representation, impartiality and equity. Accountability and responsible and transparent decision-making processes are also central elements of good governance. Although governance and democracy have been extensively featured in public organizations (i.e. governments), the concepts are relevant and important to private organizations (i.e. nonprofit and commercial organizations) operating in various sectors and industries.
