ABSTRACT

As we now have become accustomed to hear: the twenty-first century is the urban century where the majority of the world population lives in cities and will increasingly do so. And with this continuous migration to urbanized areas the question emerges of how to expand in already existing cities. In order to save the countryside from being overbuilt, many regions have introduced policies that steer growth away from certain places to those that are considered to be more appropriate. Under the term of sustainability, smart growth policies, which mandate the intensification of urbanized areas, have become the norm.
