ABSTRACT

When the Indian government officially opened the Kingdom of Zanskar to foreign visitors in 1974, dozens of mountaineers, geologists, Buddhist scholars, and tourists ventured into this remote Himalayan mountain region. This number grew steadily over the years, and with it, so too did the relationships that would foster ongoing humanitarian sponsorship and aid. Today many of the small villages in this high Himalayan region have benefitted from architectural and planning assistance donated by international sponsors, NGOs, and visiting volunteers.
