ABSTRACT

In what ways are urban planning practitioners influenced by hazards research, and how do they influence research? This chapter identifies who is involved with public and private sector hazard mitigation and disaster recovery practice, describes key factors affecting the relationships between research and practice, assesses how research influences mitigation and recovery practice, summarizes ways research has enhanced or failed practice, and outlines remaining knowledge gaps. Addressing tensions between research and practice, it calls for more consistent inclusion of hazard mitigation and recovery knowledge in required core curricula for graduate planning schools to promote closer two-way communications between researchers and practitioners.
