ABSTRACT

This research summarizes the influence of Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 on local hazard mitigation planning and analyzed the opportunities for integrating hazard mitigation into local planning frameworks. This research also discusses the strengths of the two different categories of hazard mitigation plans–the stand-alone hazard mitigation plan and the integrated hazard mitigation plan. The strategies were provided to promote the integrated hazard planning efforts that can help achieve the win-win goals of hazard risk reduction and safe growth. The findings of this research can be beneficial for local land use planners, emergency managers, and elected officials.
