Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to discuss ICH in former Portuguese colonies, and to analyze the role of museums in their safeguarding. Special attention is given to manifestations of the Portuguese language and its metamorphoses, memory construction and the performing arts. We address primarily the situation in those countries that achieved independence after the Portuguese revolution of April 25, 1974. 1 Our purpose is to understand the interaction between museums and ICH and how museums might strengthen identities, the role of social actors and their rights to memory. Intercultural and intergenerational transmission and empowerment of individuals and groups in Lusophone countries are also discussed.
