ABSTRACT

The optimum state of health in postpartum women is articulated in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) definition of general health as the physical, mental and social well-being of a person (WHO and UNICEF 1978). The term well-being is further defined by several other authors as ‘being equivalent to the state of set conditions which fulfil or enable a person to work or fulfil her realistic chosen and biological potentials’ (Lucey 2007, p. 103) and ‘creatively build strong and positive relationships with others and contribute the [sic] their chosen community’ (Beddington et al. 2008)
