ABSTRACT

On March 11, 2011 Japan was struck by the largest earthquake ever recorded in history, the “Great East Japan Earthquake”. The 9.0 magnitude earthquake caused subsidence and liquefaction of land and collapse and submergence of buildings. Subsequently a tsunami hit the Pacific coast areas of the Tohoku region (northeastern Japan). Core meltdowns occurred at three reactors of Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant because of loss of power and emergency cooling functionability.
