ABSTRACT

The status and presence of heritage language (HL) education in New Zealand varies widely across the country, depending largely on the degree to which each language community is recognized and/or supported by the national government, particularly by the Ministry of Education. For example, the New Zealand government has supported Māori language education on a wide, though varied, scale nationally. However, in addition to the Māori language for which New Zealand is known, there are over 150 languages other than English spoken regularly by more than 20% of residents (Statistics New Zealand, 2013). This chapter focuses on the largest HL-speaking community in New Zealand—Pasifika.
