ABSTRACT

There has been a large Turkish-speaking population in Germany since the initial labor recruitment agreement between the former West Germany and West Berlin and Turkey, which began in 1961 and lasted until 1973. 1 Presently there are about three million residents with roots in Turkey, most of whom live in the urban industrial centers of the former West German Federal States and West Berlin. The programs and community institutions supporting Turkish in Germany are found in those areas, and are the focus of the discussion in this chapter.
