ABSTRACT
From earliest times the growth of settlements has been influenced by the connectivity they enjoy with other places through natural or man-made transport routes. The form of settlements themselves has undergone profound changes with the development of successive transport technologies. Bicycles, trams, buses and commuter railways overcame the constraints of walking and – coupled with population growth – introduced ‘suburbia’ as the dominant urban form surrounding the densely developed core of formerly compact towns and cities.
