ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impact of urban heat on health. It provides frameworks through which to view vulnerability, heatwaves and heat-related public health risk and what this means for urban planning. A number of issues are raised such as ageing and chronic illness, physical activity and community resilience, and all of this against a background of increasing global temperatures. But to begin, it starts with the real experiences and impacts of heatwaves during Australia’s summer of 2013-14.
