ABSTRACT
Japan, Korea, and Taiwan represent the few viable democracies in East Asia, a region that has only six functioning democracies (Indonesia, Mongolia, and the Philippines are the remaining three democracies) out of eighteen sovereign states and territories. These three countries also exemplify the success story of achieving high growth along with a liberal political system, the combination that many nations in the region and beyond strive to attain.
