ABSTRACT
Today, East Asia represents a region of democratic underdevelopment. Four decades after the third wave of democratization began to spread from Southern Europe, much less than half the countries (seven of sixteen) in the region meet the minimum criteria for electoral democracy (Chase 2011; Freedom House 2015). This ratio is lower than the worldwide average of six democracies for every ten countries (Moller and Skaaning 2013).
