ABSTRACT
Japan has the oldest democracy in East Asia, and it was one of the first non-Western, non-European, non-Christian countries in the world to democratize. Japan’s experience thus offers insights into two of the central questions of this book: Why has it been so difficult for democracy to take root in East Asia? And, how can countries in the region democratize?
