ABSTRACT

During the twentieth century, three major events occurred in Mongolia which fundamentally changed the lives of all its citizens. The significance and effects of these changes, which continue to this day, still cannot be quantified and fully understood. This is partly because over the last century, communist ideology; the distortion of history; the destruction of historical documents, physical evidence, and archives; and the killings of witnesses have had a massive impact on how Mongolians view their history and how they understand what really happened. Only after Mongolia transitioned to democracy was the public able to see how far-reaching and deep the distortion of history had been in society.
