Abstract

Although systematic forms of economic thinking could already be found in the Renaissance states, and Italian political economy produced its classic works during the Enlightenment, the study of economic history emerged from the great transformations of the twentieth century. The reasons lie as much in the political as in the economic and intellectual spheres.
