ABSTRACT

We begin with two anecdotes from our many years spent researching on sport and environmental issues. The first comes from a recent study we undertook on environmental issues and golf. We learned during this project that a trade association representing the pesticide industry – an association that had once legally contested proposed legislation that would restrict the use of pesticides – also featured prominently on a council responsible for accrediting golf courses in pesticide spraying (Millington and Wilson, 2016). In other words, and to our surprise, an organization once opposing pesticide legislation in court, and one with a financial interest in the sustained use of chemicals, was directly involved in the regulatory process.
