Writing a review article for an international handbook on ‘race and ethnicity’ that summarizes and represents the relevant scientific publications on this topic in Germany is a challenging assignment. In Germany, the concept of ‘race’ has been disavowed for historical reasons and the term ‘ethnicity’ also plays a rather marginal role in social sciences of sport in the country. Given this, a chapter that focuses on research in this field in Germany must look for scientific discussions that address associated topics.
