Although definitions of globalization are debated, most scholars agree with Roland Robertson’s seminal definition: ‘The compression of the world as a whole and the intensification of consciousness of the world as a whole.’ 1 This increasing global connectedness in geographical and imaginary terms is evident in sports labour migration. Increasing numbers of athletes and sports personnel migrate across national and international borders and connect with places that were previously beyond their geographical reach. 2 Moreover, an increasing number of athletes imagine their career trajectories as transnational rather than bound to specific local and national settings and policies. 3
