Abstract

William Wynn Westcott (1848–1925) was a medical doctor, writer, editor and occultist, most famous for being one of the co-founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, together with Samuel Mathers and William Robert Woodman. Born in Leamington, England, the youngest of six siblings, his parents died early in his life and he was adopted by his uncle, Richard Westcott Martyn, who, like his father, was a surgeon. Westcott attended Queen Elizabeth Grammar School at Kingston-upon-Thames, following which he studied medicine at University College in London. In 1871, he became a partner at his uncle’s practice in Martock, Somerset. It was during this period that he met and married Elizabeth Burnett, with whom he had five children. (Unfortunately for Westcott, she did not share his interest in occultism.)
