Abstract

Arthur Edward Waite (1857–1942) mapped his own path through the terrain of the British occult revival. While his fellow occultists focussed more on magical experimentation and its intersections with contemporary scientific theories, he embraced the mystical and religious aspects of the traditions that made up nineteenth and twentieth-century occultism. As an author and critical historian of modern occultism, he also stood in stark contrast to the seemingly indiscriminate and all-accepting perspective of many of his occult colleagues.
