This chapter explores subcultures and individuals found in the occult world that celebrate their difference from humans. Vampire, Lycanthrope, and Otherkin are the terms used to designate individuals who understand themselves to be either not human or only partially human, with the rest of their subjectivity comprised of some ‘other’ species: ‘real’ or metaphysical. The identity terminology is slippery, for example some accounts of Otherkin include vampires, others do not and not all who identify as non-or-partially human use such labels at all. Nonetheless, the terms have gained increasing currency in both the identity politics of numerous subcultures and the academic study of religion, therefore, despite the noted contestation they will be employed herein.
