ABSTRACT

Charitable giving can contribute to the environment. More than $300 billion was donated to charity in the United States in 2012, which was responsible for 2 percent of the country’s GDP (Giving USA, 2013). Environmental or animal-related organizations received 3 percent of the total giving in the same year. Compared to donation activities in the Western countries, much less fundraising efforts have been made in East Asia. Eastern Asian countries except Hong Kong were ranked relatively low in the World Giving Index ranking, in which Japan was ranked 105th out of 153 countries (Charities Aid Foundation, 2011). In 2007, total donations in Japan amounted to just only 0.11 percent of the country’s GDP. Also, the percentage of individual donors in Japan was only 19 percent in the same year, compared with 88 percent in the United States (Giving USA, 2008).
