ABSTRACT
Modern theater developed in the early years of the sixteenth century in central and northern Italy, where various festive genres rooted in pre-Christian rituals delighted the populace and vernacular literature based on dialogue flourished, and where courts and humanists revived Roman and Greek comedy.
