The Islamic State/Daesh has captured much of the world’s attention by claiming its brutal practices including beheadings, mass executions, selling Yazidi women and girls into slavery, and its destruction of pre-Islamic art in Northern Iraq were justified by Islamic tenets. Unfortunately, IS/Daesh is only one source of violence and the denial of freedom of religion and belief in the Middle East. This human right has been trampled on by the Assad regime in Syria, secular authoritarians including Al Sisi in Egypt, as well as the Saudi monarchy in Riyadh.
