ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the potential of Landscape Biography as a new approach to landscape characterisation, with specific reference to the Netherlands. Building on examples from both urban and non-urban contexts, the chapter deals with key concepts such as the layered nature of landscapes, authorship and personal involvement, design and redevelopment, and memory and narrative. It aims at stimulating thinking about creative transformation and the management of change supported by applied research, research by design and new digital facilities such as digital cultural biographies.
