ABSTRACT

Rapid development in Cyprus is threatening the historic and visual character of the island’s landscapes. A Landscape Character Assessment (LCA) project was initiated under the auspices of the Laona Foundation and the Department of Town Planning and Housing to map the landscapes of the whole island as the basis for improved spatial planning. This chapter describes the method developed and the results so far, indicating how the UK approach was adapted to the Cypriot context and concluding with comments about its possible application towards more sustainable planning into the future.
