ABSTRACT

I have been asked to look back to my paper with James Quirk, ‘Cross-subsidization, incentives, and outcomes in professional team sports’ (Fort and Quirk, 1995, henceforth FQ95), and at the subsequent work related to it. I am honoured to do so and to have the article recognised this way. FQ95 marked the beginning of my journal contributions on sports economics. 2 It is annually my most cited journal article by a long shot and my most cited piece of work. (Oh to be younger again.) Many colleagues tell me it has had a significant impact on their work, and that is most gratifying.
