ABSTRACT

Zimba (D26), also called Binja-Sud, is spoken in the Maniéma Province in the DR Congo. The chapter treats the phonology and morphology of the language. The language has a seven-vowel system, with vowel harmony involving the mid vowels in suffixes, and full height harmony, which is functional in prefixes. The two-tone system, with application of Meeussen’s rule, gives rise to many tonal minimal pairs in the lexicon and a heavy functional load in the verbal system. Zimba has a rich system of class-changing derivation producing two degrees of diminutives and augmentatives in the singular with a common plural form for each.
