ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4, the consonant, vowel, syllable and word structure of Proto-Bantu are presented and then the major developments within the vowel and consonant systems of present-day Bantu languages are traced. Particular attention is paid to vowel harmony, post-nasal consonant alternations, pre-high vowel consonant frication, and vowel+vowel coalescence. The chapter ends with a brief consideration of “long-distance” morphophonological processes.
