ABSTRACT
Outdoor education in UK higher education (HE) first appeared in the late 1960s (Hardy & Stott, 2006), some of the earliest writings followed in the 1970s (e.g. Drasdo, 1972) and 1980s (e.g. Mortlock, 1984), with research interest growing through the 1980s and 1990s, with the Journal of Adventure Education and Outdoor Leadership established in the early 1990s and the Journal of Adventure Education and Outdoor Learning in 2000. Much of the research in outdoor education is of a pedagogical nature, and thus informs pedagogical practice. However, to date there appear to have been no formal or systematic attempts to share pedagogic practice in UK higher education, despite its growth in popularity since the 1960s, to a position today where the University and Colleges Admission System (UCAS) shows twenty-seven providers of programmes with the words Outdoor or Adventure in the title (Table 13.1).
