ABSTRACT

Li Bo was born in the ancient city of Dali, in China’s southwestern province of Yunnan. Though Li’s father was not a farmer, he enjoyed growing food and tended a large garden. One day, when Li was a child, his father took him out into the garden and helped him to plant a pumpkin seed. What happened next changed the course of Li’s life: when the seed responded by bursting from the earth and growing into a pumpkin, Li was filled with surprise and delight. “That,” he recalls, “was when I became an environmentalist.”
